Internship project Public Transport Replay

Internship project Plant Simulation

Internship project Public Transport Replay

Imagine; it’s the end of your internship at VANL. The worst of the corona sorrows are over, your project was a success, ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) is allowed to take place and there’s a party at Museumplein which starts around 3 o’clock PM. The first attendees will arrive in Amsterdam around 1 o’clock. At 2 o’clock the city is already so crowded that cars are not allowed into the city center anymore. At GVB (Amsterdam’s public transport company) people are working around the clock to manage the hustle and bustle.

Public Transport Replay, the tool you’ve been working on, allows one to visually replay a chosen day on a map, showing pop-up messages with actual context information that add an extra layer of meaning. You can fast forward or rewind time and see all PT-vehicles move on a map. The vehicle’s color shows its punctuality: green meaning timely, red meaning delayed. But you’ve added an extra feature during your internship; not only does it show the big dynamic of the public transport that day, it can also predict the effects of such an event. Where and when will vehicles get stuck in the crowd? When will the departure punctuality turn late? When will things go back to normal? And what are the triggers for these anomalies?

All timetables and real-time data from all busses, metros and trains in The Netherlands are already available in our database. The largest table has over 4.3 billion rows. We have been adding more context information since the beginning of this year, such as weather conditions, emergency alerts, bridge openings, events, etc. All data needed for this project is already available.

What you will do

In this project, you will start developing the data science side of this application. You will have to begin with defining the used and needed concepts and some data-cleaning to prevent accidental logging mistakes from cluttering the analysis. A base-line has to be established; calculated statistics to use and test the simulated model on. For example; what is a ‘normal’ driving time? What is an average punctuality? Secondly, it’s time for model extraction; finding the most accurate model and the triggers that make a driving time deviate from this model. Based on this analysis you will have to find an algorithm that is able to “predict” the need for flexible public transport. “Snow is expected in three days, it is advised to add X minutes to the driving times of these lines: (…)” or “An event was just scheduled for the … area, make sure to add X extra trips to the timetable due to extra passengers”.

Your daily activities

Every morning starts off with a team meeting; we like to know what everybody’s up to and this allows for some brainstorming when one of us gets stuck on a problem. We’re a small team and try to help each other where possible. This not only means that we’re standby to help you, it might also mean that we sometimes enlist you to help us think of solutions or (technical) designs. Your day mostly consists of working on your project independently, with a lunch break consisting of a walk around the lake next to our office building. Together we will schedule regular meetings to make sure it all goes smoothly.

We look forward to receiving your application. Send your C.V. and motivation to edegraaf@vanl.nl before 17/03, with the subject “Application Process Mining / Machine Learning Thesis”. We will contact you as soon as possible.

    Internship Content Marketer

Are you looking for an internship where your opinion is valued and you can express yourself creatively? Do you want double the experience? Do you have affinity with IT and developments in the software sector? Look no further. We offer a combined internship for two different companies that work together closely. For these two software companies we are looking for a strong and creative content marketer.

As both the companies focus on data, either on collecting the data or on analyzing this data into insightful information, the matter can be quite abstract. And that’s exactly where the challenge of this internship lies; how to communicate simply and clearly about complex and extensive content? This question poses a challenge, yet also possibilities: you will not only be writing texts, but you can also create videos or animations, visit clients, think about the design of the website, but most of all; we want to refresh our marketing strategy and make it like our software is; new, informative and understandable.

    What you will do

In this internship, you will enjoy the freedom of setting up a new marketing strategy, including one complete campaign (with the duration of three to four months) crossing all available platforms (think Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Mailchimp, Instagram, even print, if you may). You will create content accordingly, write the marketing plan, create a budget and execute/review the campaign. Naturally, you can lean on the experience of the current marketer, but there is a lot of freedom here. We will shape your internship together.

    Your daily activities

Every morning starts off with a team meeting, we like to know what everybody is up to and this also allows for some brainstorming when one of us gets stuck on a problem. After that, you’ll have a short stand up with your company supervisor to see what you want to work on that day and to see if you need any further assistance. That day, you might go to a client to shoot clips or you might want to delve into some research about creating effective animations. Your day mostly consists of working on your project independently, with a lunch break consisting of a walk around the lake next to our office building. At the end of the day you will shortly review what you’ve accomplished that day, and how it affects your overall plan.

    Your profile
    • You are able to work independently, manage your own workload and ask questions when needed.
    • You are an HBO/WO bachelor student in the field of Marketing, Design or Communication.
    • Or, you have recently finished one of the above mentioned bachelors and are looking for work experience.
    • You have an affinity with IT.
    • You are available for a period of 6 months.
    • You have (some) experience with the following tools: Mailchimp, Google Webmaster Tools LinkedIn-, Facebook- and Instagram for business, Twitter and/or WordPress.
    • You have (some) experience with Adobe CC or comparable software. You are able to translate creative ideas into tangible concepts.
    • You like working in a small and socially active team.
    Your working environment

As mentioned above, you will work for two companies; eXtractorONE and VANL.

eXtractorONE is a small Eindhoven-based start-up that is currently gearing up to start growing. The software makes it possible to download data from any webservice into a local or hosted database. There is no coding or modelling required for the end-user, this is all included in the back-end of the software. The new office is situated at the TU/Eindhoven campus, where you will work alongside young developers and seniors, both with a lot of expertise. The team consists of flexible and ready-to-learn people. The current clients are based in both the public domain (municipalities) as the private sector (service companies and estate agents).

    Internship project Plant Simulation

Imagine; it’s the end of your internship and you’ve been successful. Our client, a manufacturer, wants to know if they should invest in a new production machine. Luckily, we can consult the model factory you’ve created in Plant Simulation (a Siemens tool). Together with you and the client we start working with the model. What would happen to production when we add the new machine? Does the throughput go up? Does it shorten the production time? Does it mean they need to hire more employees? Or maybe they shouldn’t buy the machine and could fix a bottlehead somewhere else in order to improve the production process.

The real-time manufacturing data – who’s working on what workstation on which item from a specific production order (for example) – is readily available in our database. We are monitoring the entire production process and do this, where possible, automatically – closing gaps created by human error. We have created an earlier model of the production process of one of our clients, based on a smaller data set. Now, we want to expand and improve. You will be the one to map out the actual process in the production hall and play with the model to see what bottlenecks could be fixed in what way.

    What you will do

In this project, you will create a simulation model of the actual manufacturing process and find points of improvement for the production hall and thus create a direct impact with your project. At the core of this project lies, obviously, the data. You will have to start with defining the used and needed concepts and clean the data to prevent logging mistakes of cluttering the analysis. This would create a distorted picture after aggregation.

Then, you’ll have to calculate some pilar statistics to use as a base-line to test how the created simulation model relates to reality. For example; what is the average throughput? What is the average production time per order?

Once this base has been created, it’s time for process extraction; finding the actual process from the hall. You could find this process flow using a variant analysis across the event log, for example. Once you have found a representative model, we can start adding it to Plant Simulation and start playing with the affecting factors.
